Meet the Birds

Shandon Woodland isn't just home to trees, it's also a haven for hundreds of birds, both year-round residents and seasonal migrants.

The Shandon Woodland Community Group is conducting a year-long bird survey from June 2025 to June 2026 to document the full diversity of our bird community. Using the Merlin bird identification app, we're recording bird calls throughout the seasons across the 286-acre woodland.

Early findings are already remarkable. With 1,589 records of 52 species, we've documented everything from tiny Goldcrests to majestic Golden Eagles. The woodland supports a rich mix of woodland specialists like Eurasian Treecreepers, Great Spotted Woodpeckers, and Tawny Owls; summer migrants including Spotted Flycatchers, Cuckoos, and Swallows; winter visitors such as Redwings and Redpolls; and a variety of raptors, waterfowl, and songbirds. The presence of species like Red Crossbills and Ring Ouzels points to a healthy, biodiverse habitat with the varied structure needed to support birds with different feeding and nesting requirements.
